Bullying in the Academe
Higher education institutions are all bullying-prone. Strong egos of academics and scientists, coupled with hierarchical opportunities to crush new and younger colleagues, as well as a general acceptance of mistreatment for non-academic staff are all to blame. In addition, people rise through the management ranks with too little professional and formal preparation. Finally, there is a gap between knowledge in a field (like good management practices) and its application in the workplace.
Dr. Gary Namie has 21 years experience as an instructor and professor in college departments of management and psychology including the University of Southern California, Scripps College, and other colleges. He won national American Psychological Association and UCSB campus teaching awards. He developed and taught the first university course on bullying at work.
